Best Year 12 Productions

Labrat was one of the best year 12 productions because I liked the way the clip created a solid narrative in which the audience can relate to and have a connection with. The story of the protagonist is clear and delivers that message/narrative to the audience in a clear way. Moreover, the use if establishing shots of the at the beginning of the clip was done very well. This is because the shots done at the beginning seemed very high quality and cinematic. In addition, the shots where the character is creating his experiments (in the lab) were done very well as it gives us (the audience) a sense of suspense as we feel like the protagonist is creating something that will dis-equalise the narrative. Furthermore, the use of props and costumes helps create the story and create the world in which this clip is taking place.

The sound used in this clip was non-diegetic and also was parallel to the shots it was used with. The sound was parallel because it fitted in with what the protagonist was actually doing which was creating a experiment. Moreover, the use of the sound helps the audience/viewer to understand what tone the scene is being taken place which seems to be emotional atmosphere as well as a serious tone due to the seriousness expressed on the characters face.

The shots used in this clip were used very well as there was a variety of shots used. I really liked the use of extreme-close up as well as close-ups used towards the ending of the clip as they help the viewer to understand clearly what the protagonist is doing. The use of point-of-view shots helped show what the audience could see from the protagonists perspective making the audience feel engaged in the clip.

The Experiment was also one of the best year 12 productions because of the way the camera movements was used. The camera movements used were not only great but also used appropriately and not used for its intended purpose. There was a great use in narrative where several moments in the clip would appear telling the story and what the synopsis is, so far in the clip. This is used greatly as it helps the audience to understand what there watching and to engage more with it. The visuals of the clip was very cinematic as it seemed very smooth and not disrupted. Finally, the use of props really helped to shift the realism of the concept in which the clip is trying to deliver.

The camera movements used within this clip was used very effectively as it didn't put off the audiences attention. There was great use of steadicam shots really helped to give the audience a clearer view of what's happening. Scenes where the protagonist is being chased was shot without any shaky hand held movement which allowed room for clear visuals of what's happening in the scene. Moreover, the use of a tracking shot when the protagonist is being chased, was done without any shaky movements and also was in sync with the characters movements. Finally, there was great use of establishing shots when the clip begun which was done very effectively and felt very smooth.

The sound used was non-diegetic as the characters within this clip couldn't hear it as well as being parallel to the clip. The reason why the music was parallel to the clip was because it fitted in with the action sequence that it was being played on. The music allows an emotional connection to develop from the audience with what's happening to the protagonist which engages the audience.

The camera shots used also were used greatly as it provides appropriate visuals of the character when necessary. The medium shot used when the protagonist is about to board the train was used very well as it gives a decent length of the body and the posture in which the character is in. Moreover, there were a lot of wide shots when the protagonist was running. This gave the audience the ability to know the surroundings of when the event/scene is being taken place as well as, visuals of what the character is doing and facial expression.

What Makes A Good Practical Production?

The ability to engage the audience in the content produced once it starts is key. This will allow the audience to give their full attention and engage more with what’s happening on screen. Moreover, the use of smooth style editing and camera work allows the audience to feel as if the content is realistic and is of high quality. The use of cinematic style camera work such as Steadicam shots allow for more clearer visuals and keeps the audience engaged. In addition, the camera shots and movements that are used in production should be used necessarily and not put in for any reason. The use of appropriate shot type as well as movements builds upon the narrative and gives visuals of the scene when necessary. Furthermore, the mise-en-scene should be used effectively as well. This is one of the most important parts of making a great production as it fits in with many parts of the production such as camera work and narrative. The props and use of costumes help deliver the story trying to be delivered as it creates a realistic world in which the audience can relate to and engage with. Finally, the story-line of the production needs to make sense as this is what keeps viewers entertained as well as understand what is being shown.
