New and Digital Media

Year 13: New and Digital Media

  • The change on different aspects of the media due to new technology:
News-

News is now in decline as technology has taken over the ways in which the public can find and interact with news. For example, phones now have the internet which is a secondary platform (the e-media) that news companies use in order to make their content reach to a wider audience. The internet is used by millions of users world wide and people interact with it a lot. New companies take advantage of this platform and put their content via the internet in order to gain views and interactivity from the potential consumers that they could have. Technology such as this makes it more convenient and cheaper for consumers to gain news coverage than compared to purchasing a news paper, which hardly anybody does now days.

Television-

T.V (also known as the broadcast platform) is slowly in decline along with the news/print platform as consumers (mostly the youngsters/teenagers) tend to interact more with online and computers and watch less T.V. The internet holds a lot of different types of content and sites in which youngsters can visit and it allows for a wide range of different content which the current T.V platforms doesn't offer. An example is, BBC Three which has recently gone off-air. It was a channel dedicated in attracting teenagers and an overall young audience base, but wasn't getting enough views and support and had to shut down. It has now moved online which proves that the online platform and technology has taken over and has proved itself worthy for a wider audience.

  • The termination or decline in industries or companies as a result of new technology:
An example of a famous thing that was negatively affected due to the changes in technology would be BBC Three (mentioned before). This is because the internet holds the majority of audiences and companies operating via print or broadcast are losing out and have a potential loss in terms of less views on their channel/papers.

Another impact on industries as a result of new technology would be the film industry. This is because the arrival of the internet also brings forth potential negative things such as piracy. Films that are recently put into cinemas face having their content being shown for free via the internet due to the pirate websites that allow users from around the world to view them free of charge. This attempt can cost the film industry millions as there would be less money being made as people will decide to watch it from home instead of spending £10 for a ticket.

The film A Field in England took a unique distribution strategy in order to prevent such attacks losses from occurring. It had published all its companies on all platforms (simultaneous release) including online, so that they can generate the potential revenue they would have made if they didn't publish it in the traditional method.

  • Influence on other aspects of society:
Politics-

The government argues that the internet is causing people especially youngsters to develop poor communication problems as they only are seen to interact via internet and not face to face. This can have a major impact as youngsters who go into work would have already well developed communication skills, by using the internet to communicate, the ability to talk to new people will add to issues and can have a major problem within the working world.

Education-

The arrival and introduction of new tech has had both a positive and negative effect on youngsters. This is because it allows news and information to be sent and received much quicker allowing for users to learn more quicker and more conveniently. However, it can keep people occupied for a long time which can allow them to postpone work that is vital for educational use. They seem to become addicted to the devices they use and seem to not stop using them.

Protest movements-

The introduction to new technology has allows protest movements to gain recognition and attention much more effectively and faster than compared to previously. This is due to social media which allows word to spread fast from one end of the spectrum to the other. Organisations that have an appeal for something can use social media to gain an audience and supporters and can quickly achieve what they need to do as they have been recognised much faster due to this new tech.
  • The impact of social media on users/people:
The new tech can have both a positive and a negative impact on users. This is because devices such as the Iphone that have touch screen help keep people in line with the current state of technology. Most businesses seek to find people who understand new tech and have a good understanding of such things. By interacting with them and using them as well as learning more about them can really help boost skills and knowledge as users can keep up with the current advances in tech along with the economy and society in general.

It can have a negative impact on users as they can become less sociable in the real world. People (mainly the youngsters) tend to use social media as a way of interaction with friends and family, but this can cause serious problems in future interactions as people will forget how to communicate effectively to a person face to face as they are too used to interacting via text/messages. This type of skill is required in society as people will always come across a new person whether it is at work or day to day shopping.

  • Promotion opportunities of the people:
The use of new technology comes with much more opportunities for people to promote themselves. An example would be YouTube. This is essentially an online site where people around the world submit videos of themselves or of something that will gain the interest of the public. It is sites like these that attract youngsters and is the platform which is dominating T.V. People can make a video of an important message or share something of their that is linked with their personal interest, and by uploading this content it will be available to a wide audience who can gain access to this content very quick.

New technology has aided people in trying to get themselves noticed by the public such as, through the world wide web and even the addition of social media and apps. These are new tech that didn't exist previously and each app contains special and unique feature that can help many individuals in promoting them self publicly. Tech advances tend to change to help benefit peoples preferences and this is what makes it useful and very powerful amongst society and amongst individuals.
