Ideology Further Reading Task

MM52 Page 34
(Hunger Games)

The view of capitalists ideology presented in the Hunger Games films:

1)

The view of capitalism is seen to be unfriendly to society. There have been many rebellions in the past due to the change in the 'Capitols' ruling system and this lead to stricter rules being put in place in order for society to be kept in line. This is apparent in the line, "The Games serve to keep the districts under control, as punishment for previous rebellions, and to warn them to stay in line". This quotation accentuates the fact that the Capitol has created new punishment systems in order to keep each district in line of obeying the law. The use of a powerful phrase 'under control' suggests that only the powerful can make the decisions of how the districts should be run. Furthermore, it suggests that previous actions were near to success and that the current government are frightened that one day rebellion will occur and may become successful.

Another view of capitalism seen in the Hunger Games is the fear of the people. The article suggests that the people have rebelled many times and this form of activity shows that the capitol are using the districts as objects and ways of gaining more resources for themselves rather than sharing across the community. This is apparent in the line, "Every district is poor; people struggle to survive on small amounts of food and minimum wages, while they work to provide coal, technology, food, power and other services to the Capitol". This quotation illustrates the fact that society are treated as slaves as they have to work many hours and put all efforts into ensuring that the capitol got the power and resources they needed and they would receive low pay in exchange for the great hours of work they did.

The power of the media and the shaping of ideological beliefs:

2)

The Hunger Games show how the power of propaganda can change societies mind as the actions and events that have taken place all act like a way to show who is in power and to spread awareness of the Capitols power and influence, which is what propaganda clearly does. This apparent in the line, "Each year two children between the ages of 11-18 are sent from each district to partake in The Hunger Games, an annual event that involves forcing each child to kill one another until only one is remaining". This quotation conveys the fact that the Capitol government that the districts are under control have placed these cruel and evil punishments in order to restore their power amongst the districts. This form of action can act as propaganda as the people are forced to believe that the Capitol is the strongest and are powerful. The use of a powerful word 'forcing' suggests that they hold the most power in the hierarchy and that they can d whatever they want to do whether that is arresting citizens or even killing them as they hold the most power in society.

(They Live)

Accepted ideological beliefs in western society:

1)

  • Realise your true potential
  • Be yourself
  • Lead a satisfying life
  • People should put their families first
Gramci's Theory

2) Gramci's theory suggests that the use of power is not used with force but is used through consent. This means that people allow some sort of power to be placed amongst them rather than just being forced on them. This is one way in which those in power maintain their control through consent, otherwise placing force on someone allows them to lost their control. He argued that the power of ideology comes primarily from ideas and strictures which support an elite social group.

3) Louis Althusser delivers an understanding of how we, the consumers, are controlled through ideology. His view point was he believed that ideology was 'the greatest material of power' and dominates our day-to-day lives. This occurs through two key forms of control:

Repressive State Control: This is primarily about those who have the most power such as, Government, Army, Police and Courts etc.- which are dominated by the ruling elite. These 'state agencies' deliver their masses through violence and fear.

Idealogical State Apparatuses: Church, the media, educational institutions etc.- these institutions control and dominate implicitly through common sense rather than through fear. This links in with Gramci's theory, that power can be used though consent rather than through force.

Binary Oppositions and Ideology

Binary Oppositions and Ideology In The Media

Russell and Nigel Clash

Binary Oppositions present during this clip:

  • Good vs Evil
  • Society vs Government
  • The right vs the wrong
  • People vs Corruption
  • Upper class vs Lower class
  • Wealthy vs immigrants
  • Rich vs poor
  • Hero vs villain

Ideologies displayed in this clip:

The most common sense of ideology that is repeated constantly in this clip is that the government is doing the right thing. Through-out this clip, most of the audience were essentially agreeing with Nigel's points as they seem to not agree with the point in which Russell is taking on this subject. Moreover, they seem to believe that the government is doing the right thing, however some (only now days) do people truly rebel against certain beliefs that the government believe is the 'right' thing for the people/society.

Another common ideology that a majority of people in this audience agree on and believe is true is that immigrants are causing issues for the country. This has been repeated by many people who spoke directly to Russell as they share their own personal experiences with the issue. Furthermore, the working class (which was majority of the people present during this talk) has been severely hit by the issue that has struck the country. Therefore, as majority of the audience is from a working class background, they are more likely to believe that immigrants are the one to blame for the current situation.

Finally, another common ideology that has been present during this clip has been that the countries system needs to be changed. This is because majority of the audience are confused on where the money (from the economy) has gone and where it is. Both Russell and Nigel want a tremendous change to society, however their values and opinions is what makes their ideas differ from one another. In addition, this ideology of 'change' is the key and main thing that all members of the public share in common /based on this current situation). Therefore, one of the most common ideologies present during this talk was the need for change in society and in the government.

Straight Outta Compton Police Check

Binary oppositions present during this clip:

  • Black ethnic group vs police
  • Appearance vs belief
  • People vs law
  • White vs Black
  • Corruption vs Equality
  • Society vs individuals

Ideologies displayed within this clip:

One significant ideology that is shown in this clip is that black people are seen as gang members or criminals. During today's society this stereotype as well as ideology of society still remains very active. The media such as news papers portray black people as criminals and this creates the ideology and representation of them to be like this. In this clip, the police stop five group members and force them to get on to the ground due to their appearance. This quote clearly shows how even during the date where this film is meant to take place, there is still the same level of racial inequality amongst black people.

Another ideology that is shown in this clip is that american police are racist towards black people. It has been seen in the news that many black american citizens have been abused or arrested due to their ethnicity. This ideology may not be seen by the police themselves but is clearly seen by society who see this news from another country other than America itself. In this clip it in evident that these police-men had stopped these five group members because of their appearance and this indicates that even in today's society these events still take place.

Finally, another ideology shown in this clip is that the skill of being and musician or music artist is seen as not an 'Art'. This ideology is believed by many people in both today's society and in the society in which this film is based on. People didn't value to importance of music and considered it as annoying and not needed. However, it is the importance of music that helps children to elevate in literature or gain a creative mind as words can inspire them to achieve something greater. This ideology is what most people didn't agree with and so the dominant ideology was that music was not considered an art. Furthermore, in today's society this type of ideology does remain fairly dominant, however it is changing.

Ideology In The Media

MM52- P34

  • Ideology:

The power of ideology is often those in power control ideas, as well as resources. This means that those who are higher up in the hierarchy have a greater influence on those below them and in this case it is the public and those who live in the districts. In the film 'Hunger Games' the power of ideology comes from the most powerful, in this case it is President Snow. He applies his own creativity into the game and this is mostly going to be from his point of view of what changes he would want to the game and not what others think of it. This ideological thinking is from some persons perspective and the way he sees things to be run may not always be the best way for other people as it is from his point of view. He is concerned that other who are below his in the hierarchy are more likely to rebel against his authority and so he tries to gain his power by spreading fear amongst those below him such as the districts. The way he comes across with his ideological thinking and information is through the propaganda he produces. Propaganda can influence many consumers who come across it as the propaganda is used to influence a certain way of thinking and this can lead to people changing their perception towards a specific thing.

  • Dystopia and Propaganda:
The article states that those in power (those at the top of the hierarchy is slowly crumbling. This is because although they hold most of the power, those below them are joining together to rise up against the corrupt government. The one who has the most power in the districts is Katnis and she uses propaganda to influence the need for rebellion as she hacks into Capitol system and publishes a video of a hospital being bombed by the Capitols. This move was sued to encourage people to turn against the support of the Capitol and to rebel against them due to their cruel system. Katnis uses the power of the T.V to help deliver he message across to the world stating that the Capitol is cruel and is not the right system for them.

MM52- P48

  • Ideology
In this article, the ideology in Britain changes as new ideas emerges however there three dominant ideologies that society accepts or agree on even though everyone doesn't entirely agree. The three dominant ideologies are the following:

• People should put their families first.
    • People should work hard for their money.
      • Women should behave in feminine ways, and look after their appearance.

These ideologies often are accepted without any question or argument as society has consumed this ideology and will agree to it. Although there can be people who counter this ideology, this doesn't make a significant impact on societies point of view.

      Media Magazines Task

      Key Concepts of Representation

      MM50

      1. The article is about female audiences who view the media often are 'dominated' by heterosexual Caucasian of 0-2 models. People complain stating that women in advertising are 'too white' and under size 6. Yet there is still advertising both men and women are suffering issues with body image due to media imagery. The introduction of the plus size model helps advertisers in projecting an image of what people actually look like.
      2. The name of the film that has sparked fused this debate is known as 'A Perfect 14'.
      3. The female gaze is somewhat different from the male gave judging from this article as both versions of the female gaze have a similar view point however this article focuses not from a women being 'looked at' but rather how women feel by the narrow use of different sized women. This article is showing how advitisors want to project the image of women too look a certain way whereas Mulvery's theory is that women are often there to be looks at by men.
      4. I think that the media shouldn't keep portraying women like this as this can really have a major impact on many women's lives. The media is trying to project women in a certain way and therefore, some women would feel uncomfortable knowing that they do not fit in with that category and can rally have an effect on many women's lives and the way they see themselves.
      5. The film is about a divide in females representation in the media. Women in the trailer believe that 95% of the women portrayed in the media are skinny and beautiful and they believe that consumers aren't buying the product but instead they are buying the portrayal of the Caucasian women. Women feel depressed about the way they look because of other peoples portrayal of 'normal' women are different to other woman who don't fit that category.
      MM51

      1. The introduction to this article is about how the media is re-presented after the media object has been captured. The article states that the producer behind the media object will in some shape or form 'mediate' the image in a way that it will perceive more value and thought than the original object did for example, a famous celebrity has a photo taken, and the media will discuss the clothing or the setting of where the photo is being taken place. This isn't what the image previously was to state but the image has been mediated.

The representation of the mass media in the article is portrayed to show how the 'mediator' behind the media object is presented. In this case, the location in a film is determined by the Film Director of how this location is going to be portrayed and this is often from both the institutions and directors point of view. Another example, is the new paper. The company running the news paper will decide what type of story to cover and how to portray it whether its positive or negative.

The how, who and why representations in this article is to show how each media text or object is used to portray a certain way of thinking and the steps taken by the mediator to get this representation as effective as possible. The mediator will need to go through various requirements and steps before publishing a media object to the consumers. This is because the producer of that media text/object wants it to be presented and seen in the same way he/she wants it to be. For example, a new war film has been released and the poster of that film is designed to promote it. The producer would place explosion images as well as planes or even weaponry within that media object in order to convey the genre and the visuals of that film.

Stuart Hall's approach to ideology in this article was to show how the mediators/producers way of making the consumer think or even react to a certain media text will not always have the same impact that the producer intended. This was known as ‘Encoding/Decoding' which basically told how consumers would add their own thoughts and beliefs on the media text and this would change the entire message that the media text is trying to convey.

The new media and representations statement is about how consumers now days often create their own media and this is often through social media. Moreover, consumers and people now days are more into user generated content and distribute their thoughts and opinions on to their friends or even followers (depending on the type of platform). The use of social media allow us to construct our own media and identity and for our consumers to take that media text or object in. Furthermore, the article states that due to the many generated content being produced by various users around the world, they are not only created new and original content but also they are constructing their personalities and characteristics to the world.

      3) Overall, I do become aware of the things that I do post online as the content that is published through the world wide web can be seen by millions of people using the internet and this can be very vital with the type of content wanting to be produced. However, I am to a large extent aware of how I present my self online. This is because the way you construct yourself online can or cannot (up to the user) be an exact representation of your life and can be altered. This can be dangerous as people want to see themselves as being different to who they actually are and this can give off the wrong impression to people of they type of person you actually are due to the way you construct yourself. People now days often portray themselves (through social media) as being completely different to who they are in real life and their friends can notice that. This can be very damaging as people confidence may be more lenient into the side of your virtual self rather than you actual self and this confusion can affect peoples day-to-day activities and social interactions as they have lost their personality. Overall, I am very aware of the way I present myself online as I don't just see the  information that I post from my point of view but from others point of view and this is a clear indication of being aware of the data and information that is posted via the internet.

      Representation Theories Task

Representation of Star Wars The Force Awakens

      Theory 1: Perkins

One reason why the Star Wars the Force Awakens Trailer follows Perkins theory is because Perkins theory suggests that stereotypes can be positive and sometimes true. This is apparent in the trailer when the majority of the characters are of white ethnic backgrounds and are seen to be more intelligent. The use of white ethnic people supports Perkins theory as a majority of white people are portrayed as intelligent which clearly supports Perkins theory as this stereotype can be true. The use of white people being seen a majority in the trailer suggests that white people are intelligent as they are the centre of attraction throughout this trailer. Moreover, white people (seen in the trailer) are portrayed positively as the stereotype of white people can be seen as true.

Another reason why the Star Wars Trailer follows Perkins theory is because the portrayal of black people has changed over time. This is apparent in the trailer where the black character is seen to be the protagonist (or one of the main characters) within the film. This portrayal of people from black ethnic background has changed as previously, black people where portrayed as ‘weaker’ than compared to people from white ethnic backgrounds. The use of John Boyega (play’s Finn) in the trailer really supports Perkins point of ‘change’ as his portrayal in the film is more significant than compared to the portrayal of black people previously.

Finally, another reason why the Star Wars Trailer follows Perkins theory is because of the portrayal of female characters has changed over time. This is apparent in the trailer where the majority of screen time was of the female character. This portrayal makes the audience suggests that she is the protagonist and is one of the leaders within the film. This supports Perkins theory because women aren’t always portrayed as the protagonist and are mostly portrayed as damsel in distress than compared to be the hero. The use of the female character being portrayed as a ‘hero’ in the trailer this shows how the portrayal of women has changed over time and has become more acceptable by viewers.

      Theory 2: Levi-Strauss

One reason why the Star Wars Trailer follows Levi-Strauss theory because his theory suggests that some stereotypes can create a dominant or an alternative representation. This is apparent in the trailer when males are presented as superior as they have weapons and are part of an army. This is a dominant representation of men as men are presented as masculine and protective and also patriotic. Moreover, the male characters carry weaponry as well as artillery which support the presentation of men in the army. The use of men handling guns supports Levi-Strauss theory as it is a dominant representation of men as they are seen as both patriotic (of their country/race) and protective/superior.

Another reason why the Star Wars Trailer follows Levi-Strauss theory is because there is an alternative representation in this trailer. This is apparent in the trailer where the female character is portrayed as the protagonist in the trailer. This is an alternative representation of females as females are seen to be weaker than men and often are portrayed as damsel in distress, however in this clip the female character is portrayed as the saviour. The use of the female character being seen more than once in this trailer shows her significance in the actual film and often females aren’t as significant in film before. Moreover, the female character has taken the role of a male character as the majority of the actions that the female character is doing in this trailer is what the ‘viewers’ expect a man to be doing such as wielding a weapon.

Finally, another reason why the Star Wars Trailer follows Levi-Strauss theory is because there is an alternative representation of black people. This is apparent in the trailer as there is a black person who is portrayed as a second protagonist as he has equal amount of screen time (in the trailer) as the female character. This is an alternative representation because black people are often not seen as the protagonist but as the enemy of ‘the weaker character’ however, in this trailer the character is portrayed as more of significance than compared to other character seen in the trailer.

      Theory 3: Mulvey

One reason why the Star Was Trailer follows Mulvey’s theory is because the portrayl of the female character is for men to look at and for the female to be looked at. This is apparent in the trailer where the female character is sitting down and looking in to the distance. This shot really supports the ideology of Mulvey as the female character is looking in to the distance; the male viewers are looking at the female character as being attractive. The use of the female character being placed in the centre of the shot signifies that she is there to look attractive and to look appealing to the viewers. Moreover, the female character is seen to be doing not much which gives the male viewers the chance to view the female character and look at her.

      Representations

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer

      1)

There is mostly people from white ethnic backgrounds seen through out this trailer as well as one of the main protagonists being white middle aged, However there is also a black middle aged male who is portrayed as the centre of attraction in this trailer which could possible signify that he is the main protagonist. Moreover, there is also white older aged people in this trailer which shows the mixture of ages within this film. Moreover, the villain seen in this trailer is seen to be wearing a mask which is quite typical of a villain as they often wear masks to hide their identity.

      2)

Middle aged black male- This character/actor is represented alternative to the stereotype. This is because often, people refer to people of black ethnicity being violent and having a negative influence whereas the character in this trailer goes against that way of thinking. This is primarily because the character is portrayed as a good guy and is seen as the centre of attraction which does go against the stereotype.
White middle ages female- This character also is also alternate to the representation. This is because although the character is white, she is a female and females are often portrayed as 'damsel in distress' and in this trailer she is clearly presented as the centre of attraction which often is taken by a male character, This is an example of countering the stereotypes of female roles.
White middle ages male- This character is portrayed as dominant to the representation. This is because white old aged people as seen to be the person who guides people as well as being seen as more wiser which is what this character (towards the end) is portrayed as.
Villain- The villain is also an example of a dominant representation. This is because often the villain hides his/her face from the protagonist as well as wearing black clothing which does follow the stereotype of villains.

      3)

      • Majority of the ethnicity of people seen within this trailer are white ethnicity and could be of American or British origin as the trailer is scripted in English language,
      • Villain is seen with his face covered and wears black clothing which is typically what villains would wear.
      • The black male is seen in this trailer being weaker than the white female characters he seeks her help on the battle.
      • The female character is seen as the leader as she guides the black male character from the explosion which could be a stereotype.

      Dependency Theory

      Media AS- Dependency Theory

      1) I use the media for entertainment uses mostly, however I do use a percentage of the internet for information but mostly used for entertainment purposes.

      2) I believe that society (today) are to a large extent, reliant on the media. This is because over the years, technology has advanced and this has changed the media in many ways since it started. An example, is the internet. The internet is considered an essential item as it contains many devices in one single device. This like, apps and software that can do any task, or even games or films. All these type of media are all compatible with a single device. This not only is a change in technology, ultimately a way to save money as people don't have to consistently spend money on separate items when they can be free on the internet or using a portable device e.g a phone. As a result, many generations interact with the media in some shape or form simply because of the wide range of technology and advances it has.

Secondly, society is very much dependent on the media to a large extent because it interacts with peoples daily lives on a day-to-day basis. An example is BBC News, people are so used to getting news updates from their T.V that they can now get it even quicker and much faster through their phone or even on their tablet. These devices contain many media related things and therefore, share a lot of the media with the consumer. Much of society have devices that can easily access the media and the more technology advances, the more people are going to interact with the media. Overall, the media is linked with peoples lives as it contains many things that is considered 'useful' the different people which suggests its reliance on it.

      3) I believe that the dependency on the media has increased significantly since the last 10 years. This is ultimately, due to the advances and changes that have been made in technology and the increase in innovative products. One example of this is smartphones. Phones in the past 10 years have changed consistently every year and have changed tremendously. The Iphone has changed tremendously since its launch and has created many innovative features such as Siri and touch pad interface. Why has this increased the dependency on media? Well, products which were not as used previously has had a boost since then due to the changes made to them such as phones and T.V's and any more. These devices contain many functions of other devices and services all compacted into one. People believe they save money not having to spend excessive amounts off money on separate products, instead its all in one (now days). Moreover, people can get the information they value or seek in a matter of seconds and is more efficient than it was 10 years ago. As a result, people's day-to-day life becomes easier as they know they can get information in a matter of minutes due to media becoming more interactive in peoples lives in many shapes and forms; even advertisements or poster have changed since 10 years age.

      4) I think that the 'Telegraph Article' does support the dependency theory as it reveals how many people are reliant n the internet and that they feel lost without it. This is apparent in the line, "The opinion poll of 1,000 adults by the Science Museum shows how a generation that has grown up with the web has become dependent upon it". This quote supports the fact that people now days are so reliant on the internet because they grew up knowing that it's there and can have many features. The use of the powerful phrase '...become dependent upon it' suggests how people feel if the internet wasn't there. Moreover, this phrase connotes the fact that the internet has many features which is so helpful the many people, making it one of the most innovative creations of the twentieth century.

Secondly, the Telegraph Article does support the dependency theory as it agrees with the point that the media is so interactive with peoples lives that it has made society feel reliant on it. This is apparent in the line, “These survey results give a clear indication of just how integral the internet now is to people’s lives”. This quote illustrates that people are very much interactive with the internet and therefore, they develop a connection with the internet due to the many features it holds and the many features it can still do. Moreover, the quote shows how clear research that has been collected, has had an effect on many individuals lives and this can go for other segments of the media as well such as, T.V or even watches. Overall, the article agrees with the Telegraphs statement as it provides real evidence of peoples thoughts upon the power of the internet and of its importance on their day-to-day life.

      Audience Theory Task

      Audience Theory

      1)

The hypodermic needle is a theory in which people believe that aspects of media is used to help generate emotions and influence behaviours to the consumer/viewer in a negative way (can lead to dangerous actions or activities).

One way in which that the article links with the hypodermic needle is because the psychological members of the study firmly believe that video games (part of the media) influences peoples/gamers (especially the youth) to become aggressive. This is apparent in the line, "In the same way, repeated exposure to violent video games may have a cumulative effect on aggression". This quote conveys the fact that Professor Bushman believes that exposure to excessive violent games will increase levels of aggression than compared to the level before interaction with violent games. The powerful word 'repeated' illustrates the consistency that playing violent video games will lead to negative influences on the players social life. As a result, the information and beliefs of the data collectors believe that the media controls ones mind and can lead to them becoming out of control which can result in negative events or actions upon other peoples lives.

Secondly, the article link in with the hypodermic needle because the researchers believe that the media is controlling the person consuming it. In this context, they believe whoever play violent video games for long period of time (per week) are more likely to show signs of increase aggression. This is apparent in the line, "After playing a violent video game, we found that people expect others to behave aggressively". This quote reveals peoples end result to how the media effects us individuals and how we behave after consuming the media (in this case; video games). The use of a powerful word 'expect' suggests that the media that the individual consumes would also change their mind set into thinking differently. As a result, the article is an example of how people treat the media as an example of the hypodermic model.

      2)

The front page of the 'Daily Mail' links with the hypodermic model as it portrays the media to have a negative influence upon consumers and is seen to be ultimately the main blame for the incident taking place. One way in which the article links with the hypodermic needle is because it portrays the media to be the main cause of the incident. This is apparent in the line, "...is violent video game addict who rarely leaves his room". This quote (from the front page) clearly shows how the use of video games is the main cause of this incident from taking place. The reason why this article links with the hypodermic needle is because the writers of this article believe that the media has influenced this person into committing a dangerous attack on a phone company. The use of a powerful word 'addict' shows the amount of time someone spend consuming the media, the more likely they are to use that information in reality. As a result, the hypodermic model is expressed through-out the front page of this article as it shows how the media manipulated individuals into committing crimes and dangerous behaviour.

      The Two-Step Flow Model

      1) The 'Two Step Flow Model' suggested that the acts and behaviours of the audience were influenced more by 'opinion leaders' in the media, who mediate how the audience react to media texts. Overall, I think that the Two Step Flow Model is used quite a lot in today's society. This is because people follow popular peoples opinions and are most likely to change their opinions according to that opinion leader. People such as 'David Cameron' who talks about the government would most likely try to deliver information about his opinions on the government, and by him being an important figure in the debate, people who support him are more likely to listen or follow his thoughts which is an example of the Two Step Flow Model.

      2)

TotalBiscuit fits in with the Two-Step Flow Model because he reviews different types of games and gives his own opinions on them. He has 2 million subscribers which mean that there are 2 million people around the word who view his content and most likely to agree with his point/opinions. This makes TotalBiscuit an opinion leader as there are many people who follow hi thoughts and opinions throughout his channel. Moreover, there is a feature on YouTube where viewer can 'like' YouTubers content, and TotalBiscuit has thousands of like per video which indicate that there are a lot of his followers who agree on his thoughts and value them.

      3)

One reason why the the Telegraph article fits the Two-Step Flow Model is because it shows a range of different type of 'celebrities' or well-known people in society who are the most influential whether its on social media or on TV. The reason why its considered to link with the Two-Step Flow Chart is because these people have many fans who value their opinions and judgement. Many fans are likely to listen to the people they value most e.g celebrities. The post by the Telegraph shows statistics about Twitter. This is a social media which allows the public to actively be engaged in their role-models lives. People such as, Ed Sheeran who tweets stories about certain articles will have an effect on the followers. This is because social media such as, twitter is used/accessed by many people and people who follow celebrities (in this case) Ed Sheeran are more likely to read media text differently and not be manipulated by it like the hypodermic needle suggests.

      4)

One reason why Jamal Edwards fits in with the Two-Step Flow Model is because he is an inspiration to a wide audience. He produces a variety of clips and videos on YouTube to entertain an audience and he has a big influence upon them. Jamal is seen as an opinion leader as he wants his content to reveal stories and a meaning which can act like information being drawn into the consumers mind because they agree with what's been shared. Moreover, Jamal has come from  a tough background and had gone a long way into his career which acts as if he's a role model as people look up to him. His business (known as SBTV) produces music videos for all of the world to hear. Jamal considered his content to be knowledgeable and also something for the public to relate to. This can change people perception on media text however, in a good way. A s a result, Jamal shares knowledge and information with his audience and can influence his audience to react to media text, like the Two-Step Flow Model shows.

      Media Awards Homework

      Best Year 12 Productions

Labrat was one of the best year 12 productions because I liked the way the clip created a solid narrative in which the audience can relate to and have a connection with. The story of the protagonist is clear and delivers that message/narrative to the audience in a clear way. Moreover, the use if establishing shots of the at the beginning of the clip was done very well. This is because the shots done at the beginning seemed very high quality and cinematic. In addition, the shots where the character is creating his experiments (in the lab) were done very well as it gives us (the audience) a sense of suspense as we feel like the protagonist is creating something that will dis-equalise the narrative. Furthermore, the use of props and costumes helps create the story and create the world in which this clip is taking place.

The sound used in this clip was non-diegetic and also was parallel to the shots it was used with. The sound was parallel because it fitted in with what the protagonist was actually doing which was creating a experiment. Moreover, the use of the sound helps the audience/viewer to understand what tone the scene is being taken place which seems to be emotional atmosphere as well as a serious tone due to the seriousness expressed on the characters face.

The shots used in this clip were used very well as there was a variety of shots used. I really liked the use of extreme-close up as well as close-ups used towards the ending of the clip as they help the viewer to understand clearly what the protagonist is doing. The use of point-of-view shots helped show what the audience could see from the protagonists perspective making the audience feel engaged in the clip.

The Experiment was also one of the best year 12 productions because of the way the camera movements was used. The camera movements used were not only great but also used appropriately and not used for its intended purpose. There was a great use in narrative where several moments in the clip would appear telling the story and what the synopsis is, so far in the clip. This is used greatly as it helps the audience to understand what there watching and to engage more with it. The visuals of the clip was very cinematic as it seemed very smooth and not disrupted. Finally, the use of props really helped to shift the realism of the concept in which the clip is trying to deliver.

The camera movements used within this clip was used very effectively as it didn't put off the audiences attention. There was great use of steadicam shots really helped to give the audience a clearer view of what's happening. Scenes where the protagonist is being chased was shot without any shaky hand held movement which allowed room for clear visuals of what's happening in the scene. Moreover, the use of a tracking shot when the protagonist is being chased, was done without any shaky movements and also was in sync with the characters movements. Finally, there was great use of establishing shots when the clip begun which was done very effectively and felt very smooth.

The sound used was non-diegetic as the characters within this clip couldn't hear it as well as being parallel to the clip. The reason why the music was parallel to the clip was because it fitted in with the action sequence that it was being played on. The music allows an emotional connection to develop from the audience with what's happening to the protagonist which engages the audience.

The camera shots used also were used greatly as it provides appropriate visuals of the character when necessary. The medium shot used when the protagonist is about to board the train was used very well as it gives a decent length of the body and the posture in which the character is in. Moreover, there were a lot of wide shots when the protagonist was running. This gave the audience the ability to know the surroundings of when the event/scene is being taken place as well as, visuals of what the character is doing and facial expression.

What Makes A Good Practical Production?

The ability to engage the audience in the content produced once it starts is key. This will allow the audience to give their full attention and engage more with what’s happening on screen. Moreover, the use of smooth style editing and camera work allows the audience to feel as if the content is realistic and is of high quality. The use of cinematic style camera work such as Steadicam shots allow for more clearer visuals and keeps the audience engaged. In addition, the camera shots and movements that are used in production should be used necessarily and not put in for any reason. The use of appropriate shot type as well as movements builds upon the narrative and gives visuals of the scene when necessary. Furthermore, the mise-en-scene should be used effectively as well. This is one of the most important parts of making a great production as it fits in with many parts of the production such as camera work and narrative. The props and use of costumes help deliver the story trying to be delivered as it creates a realistic world in which the audience can relate to and engage with. Finally, the story-line of the production needs to make sense as this is what keeps viewers entertained as well as understand what is being shown.

      Narrative Task

      1) Film Clip: Man of Steel

      Barthes Narrative Theory:

Enigma Code- Why did the villain (General Zod) try to destroy Earth and what will he gain from doing this?
Action Code- The action of General Zod taking off his armour suggests that he wants to fight Superman by showing his true strength without any armoured protection (show his dominance). Moreover, the action of General Zod flying upwards shows to the audience that he is challenging Superman's authority by flying above his which suggests to the audience that he wants to be seen as very powerful.

      Todorov Narrative Theory:

Clip/Scene begins at a disequilibrium as the dilemma is already present at the beginning of the clip which reveals that the scene didn't start with an equilibrium. However, towards the ending of the clip, Superman defeats General Zod and a new equilibrium is set in. This restores the balance in tension as well as in the story.

      Propp- Character Theory:

      The Viallian - General Zod
      The Princess - The Family
      Hero - Superman (Protagonist)

      2) T.V Clip: The Flash

      Barthes Narrative Theory:

Enigma Code- Why did the man in yellow kill Barry Allen's mother.
      Who's going to win?
Action Code- No action code present during this clip

      Todorov Narrative Theory:

The scene beings at an equilibrium as the beginning of the clip seemed to be a normal day in the eyes of the protagonist (Barry/Flash) and the storyline seems normal. A few seconds into the clip Barry seeing the man in yellow triggers the disequilibrium as the villain has appeared and has altered the story line and has created a problem. There is no new equilibrium as the hero hasn't defeated the villain and the therefore the disequilibrium has not finished.

      Propp- Character Theory:

The Villain- The Man in Yellow/Reverse Flash
      The Dispatcher- Barry Allen
      The Hero- The Flash

      3) Film Clip: Transformers (1)

      Barthes Narrative Theory:

Enigma Code- Why is Megatron trying to destroy Earth?
      Will Megatron be defeated?
Action Code- When Megatron releases his lasher, it signifies that he is about to attack Sam in attempt to get the Allspark. The action of Megatron jumping down the building suggests to the audience that he wants to fight Optimus Prime and want's to create a problem. Moreover, when the army soldier places a laser at Blackout (helicopter Transfomrer)  it suggests that they are going to fire a weapon at it and when Blackout sees the laser is signifies that he is about fire his weapon and attack. Finally, when Sam stands up and ignored Optimus's request it suggests he is trying to kill Megatron using the Allspark (Cube).

      Todorov Narrative Theory:

The scene begins with no equilibrium and and begins with a disequilibrium as we witness/see the villain trying to kill the protagonist. Further on, in the scene there is the new equilibrium set in place when the protagonist kills/deals with the villain which restores harmony and the storyline is settled again.

       Propp- Character Theory:

      The Villain- Megatron
      The Doner- Optimus Prime
      The Helper- Optimus Prime
The Princess- The Earth and Sam
      The Dispatcher- The Autobots
The Hero- Optimus Prime and Sam
